Frequently Asked Questions

About NodeMasters

What is NodeMasters?

NodeMasters is a legal tech consultancy and on-demand delivery partner. We design, build and support legal workflow automation, AI tools and no-code solutions for law firms and in-house legal teams — usually on the Microsoft 365, HighQ, BRYTER or Avvoka platforms you already use.

What experience does NodeMasters have?

NodeMasters has three co-founders, all of whom were former BRYTER employees and have decades of combined experience delivering automation & consultancy to law firms & large corporates.

What is legal engineering?

Legal engineering combines legal domain knowledge with technical and process-design skills to build automated, working solutions for legal and compliance teams — distinct from generic software development or traditional legal advice. In practice, that means our consultants understand both how a legal team works and how to build on Microsoft 365, HighQ, BRYTER and Avvoka.

How is NodeMasters different from a law firm?

We're not a law firm and we don't give legal advice. NodeMasters is a legal tech consultancy: we help law firms and in-house legal teams design, build and maintain the technology and automated workflows that support their legal work — document automation, matter management, legal spend tracking and similar solutions.

Are you consultants, developers, or both?

Both. Our team combines legal-process consultancy — understanding what should be automated and why — with hands-on build and implementation across platforms like Microsoft 365, HighQ, BRYTER, Avvoka and Contract Express. We're not a software vendor: we don't sell our own product, we help you get more from the tools you already have, or choose new ones.

What size of organisation do you typically work with?

We work with in-house legal teams ranging from a handful of lawyers to large corporate legal departments, and with law firms from boutique practices to national firms. Because most of our solutions are built on platforms you already license — Microsoft 365, HighQ, BRYTER, Avvoka — there's no minimum size needed to get started.

Starting out with automation

We don't know exactly what we need — can you still help?

Yes — this is one of the most common starting points. We dig into your processes before touching any technology, so we can turn a vague idea or a general sense of frustration into a scoped, workable project. Come to us with a bottleneck rather than a spec, and we'll tell you what's realistic to fix and how.

How quickly can you get started on a project?

It depends on scope, but most projects begin within days rather than months, because we typically build on platforms your organisation already has — Microsoft 365, HighQ, BRYTER or Avvoka — so there's no new procurement, security review, or software onboarding to wait on.

How NodeMasters works

What platforms and technologies do you work with?

We work across Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform (SharePoint, Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI), HighQ, BRYTER, Avvoka, Contract Express, Gavel and more, as well as AI tools including Microsoft 365 Copilot and Azure OpenAI. If you're already using one of these, we build on what you have; if you're starting from scratch, we help you choose the right platform for your budget and requirements.

Can you work alongside our existing IT or legal ops team?

Yes. We're used to plugging into an existing IT or legal ops function rather than working around it — from aligning with internal security and change-control processes, to handing over fully documented solutions your own team can maintain, or providing ongoing flexible support if you'd rather we keep looking after it.

How do you handle data security and confidentiality?

Wherever possible we build on infrastructure you already control and have already risk-assessed — your own Microsoft 365 tenant, your own SharePoint, your own Azure OpenAI or Microsoft 365 Copilot deployment — so your data doesn't need to leave your organisation's environment or pass through a new third-party system. We're happy to work within your existing information security and confidentiality requirements, including NDAs, on every engagement.

How can NodeMasters help me regarding AI?

NodeMasters has a dedicated AI Lead with extensive data science experience. This means we can go 'beyond the hype' of AI, understand your processes and data in detail, and advise on how you can best leverage AI. Via our extensive experience with technologies such as BRYTER & Microsoft PowerPlatform, we can advise and implement to ensure you're making the most out of the AI functionality your organisation already has access to. Additionally, we offer an AI Literacy program to educate your employees on how to use AI safely and efficiently, enabling adoption from the ground up.

How does NodeMasters help automate processes?

NodeMasters provides full-service process automation as required by our clients. This can include initial discovery & consultancy to determine the suitability of a process for automation & the best technology to use. Additionally, NodeMasters builds & implements solutions using the tools in your stack and provides training and flexible support for technologies.

Pricing & commitment

How do you charge — fixed fee, retainer, or time and materials?

All three, depending on the work. Discrete projects with a clear scope are usually fixed fee; ongoing support and maintenance is typically a flexible retainer; open-ended or exploratory work can run on a time-and-materials basis. We agree the right model with you upfront, before any work begins.

Is there a minimum contract length?

No. Many engagements start as a single, standalone project with no ongoing commitment. Where clients want continuing support, our retainers are typically flexible and reviewed regularly rather than locked into a long minimum term.

Can we start with a small project before committing to something larger?

Yes — this is how most client relationships begin. A small, well-defined first project, such as automating one document template or a starter session on a platform like BRYTER, is a low-risk way to see how we work before scoping anything bigger.

Solutions-specific

Can your solutions integrate with our existing systems?

In most cases, yes. We regularly integrate with document management systems (SharePoint, iManage, NetDocuments), finance and ERP systems, e-signature platforms, and reporting tools like Power BI. Where a system exposes an API or a standard connector, we can typically connect to it.

We already use Microsoft 365 — what can you build on top of that?

Quite a lot, without buying anything new. Using SharePoint, Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI and Teams, we build matter management systems, legal spend and matter trackers, policy Q&A agents, document automation and structured intake forms — plus MatterSync, our own Outlook add-in for AI-powered matter filing directly from the inbox. Because it's built on your existing Microsoft 365 licences, there's typically no new software to procure or get security-approved.
